How is obesity measured?

Obesity is measured by the body mass index (BMI). The BMI reflects a person’s weight in comparison to their height (weight [kg] ÷ height2 [m2]) For instance, a woman who is 1.67m in height and weighs 65kg would have a BMI of 23.3, which is considered to be within the healthy weight range. A BMI of 30+ is considered obese.

18.5 - 24.9 25 - 29.9 30+
Classifies you within a healthy weight range. Classifies you as overweight. Being overweight can lead to obesity and the start of life-threatening health problems. Classifies you as obese. This means that you are more at risk of developing:
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Skin problems
  • Infertility
  • Depression
